Lake Mburo National Park is the smallest savannah park out of the 10 parks covering about 370 square kilometers. Its altitude ranging between 1220-1828 meters above sea level. 

Lake Mburo National park is the closest park and which is easily accessed via the Kampala Mbarara highway in Kiruhura district in western Uganda, with Mbarara to its East and Isingiro to the South.

The drive takes 4 hours to get to Lake Mburo National Park with a distance of about 240 Km.

Lake Mburo is home to large numbers of zebras and the Impala. The park has 13 other lakes of which some are covered with wetland vegetation cover. Five of the 13 lakes are natured within the park’s land area 

Lake Mburo National Park in 1983, the area was gazzated into National park from its initial state of a reserve, history records some areas having been used by the community for pastoralism and Banyankole cattle keepers, Bahima were close occupants of the nearby areas.

Scenic nature blended with crossing the equator, lake Mburo is one of the country’s smallest national parks, it is one of the savannah parks in Uganda with a number of wildlife despite it being small a national park. The parks flora ranges from acacia woodland, rocky outcrops, bushy thickets, open and wooded savannah, seasonal and permanent swamps. The Park was once dominated by savannah grasses lands that later transformed over time to a mix of wood land with small areas of open savannah blended with a small dense forest. The savanna mushrooms with in the metamorphic rocky ridges that have existed for a million years as well as forest gorges. Lake Mburo National Park landscape also has a number of hills covered with flora (Vegetation) with a portion of forest cover.

Lake Mburo is home to over 68 mammals some of which can be seen while on your game drives, buffalos, giraffes, Impalas, Topis, Elands which is the biggest antelope, Zebras, Defassa waterbucks, Hyenas and leopards. While on your boat safari you shall sight Crocodiles, monitor lizards, and Hippos in Lake Mburo.

Lake Mburo National Park is a birding haven with a number of bird species. It is also home to 350 bird species which include, African-grey Hornbill, Nubian Woodpecker, Trilling Cisticola, Brown Parrot, Barefaced Go-away bird, Bee-eaters, Cheeky Bronze-tailed starling and the majestic crowned crane  Crested Francolin,merald-spotted Wood Dove, , Red necked Spur, Common Quails, Black-billed Barbet, Greenwood Hoopoe, Blue-napped Mousebird etc.

Best Time to visit the Park

The best time to visit Lake Mburo National Park is in June to September and December to February when the vegetation is short making it easy to spot various wildlife.

How to Access the Park

It is easily accessed via the Kampala Mbarara highway in Kiruhura district in western Uganda, with Mbarara to its East and Isingiro to the South.

Nature Walks

While in the park you shall get an opportunity to move with in the park on foot with a park ranger. The nature trails include the salt lick view point where a number of animals come to drink salt water. Kazuma Hill walk which offers a good scenic panornamic view of the savannah below and along the trail we sight a number of animals such as zebras, elands, Topi and a number of bird species since the park is a good birding haven.
