Sectors in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has four sectors in the East, North and South. Each sector is different in accessibility, altitude and the trekking experience. The Gorilla families are habituated in each sector. Despite the different locations, one can connect from one sector to another.
Tourists can spend a night in Nkuringo and trek in Rushaga while in Ruhija and trek in Buhoma.
Gorilla trekking tours in Bwindi sectors is very memorable, with unique serenity of nature of each sector. When visitors track each sector on different occasions getting to know what each sector has to offer.
Bwindi is home to over 600 mountain Gorillas which is half of the total world population with its 4 sectors and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
Buhoma Sector
This sector is located in the northern part of Bwindi. It’s one of the most visited area of the park compared to other sectors. It is easy to access if ones chooses to fly from Entebbe to the airstrip in Kabale and Kihihi airstrip making Buhoma the best part of Bwindi for gorilla trekking.
Buhoma sector is home to Mubare family which is the first gorilla family that was habituated in 1992 after establishment of Bwindi forest as a national park. It also first received visitors to track in 1993. Buhoma sector is close to Queen Elizabeth national park with a drive through Ishasha sector home to the famous tree climbing lions hence this gives us an opportunity to see the tree climbing lions.
Buhoma has a number High end and Midrange lodges and it’s one of the reasons for travelling to the Buhoma sector.
While in Buhoma sector we have a chance to visit the communities for encounters with the locals, Batwa communities at the edge of the forest.
With diversity in activities and attraction, we can go hiking to different trails, these include waterfall trail, Munyaga, River Ivi trail, Rushura trail, Muzabairoloop trail. Buhoma is a good birding haven for bird watching.
Rushaga Sector
Rushaga is located in the southern part of Bwindi impenetrable forest national park, home to 5 gorilla families and many consider it to be the best for Gorilla trekking. The families in this sector include, Bweza, Busingye, Nshongi, Kahungye and Mishaya. Rushaga is a gorilla habituation center that engages in training a number of gorillas. Rushaga gives us an opportunity to visit the Batwa communities and bird watching activities.
Lodges in the sector, Bwindi jungle lodge, chameleon hill lodge, Gorilla safari camp, Gorilla haven lodge and many more. The lodges are luxury, midrange and budget accommodation at affordable cost to all clients.
Lake Mutanda gives travelers opportunity for a boat cruise while exploring the area.
Nkuringo Sector
Nkuringo is home to the Nkuringo family. The Bushaho Gorilla family sometimes crosses from Rushaga to Nkuringo sector. Nkuringo is located at a higher altitude, one needs to be physically fit and if you love hiking we recommend this sector. It has a number of accommodation to mention but a few Nkuringo Gorilla camp for midrange.
Ruhija Sector
Ruhija sector is located in Eastern part of Bwindi forest national park, with families Bitukura, Kyaguriro family, Oruzogo family, the sector stands at 2,350 meters above the sea level, making it the coldest areas in Bwindi hence we recommend travelers to carry sweaters. For hikers we have a chance to visit Rwamunyonyi peak. Ruhija is also home to a number of primates and elephants among others.
Temperatures during the day range from 23 to 26 degrees Celsius with a significant drop at night to around 11 degrees Celsius.
