The mountain is located on the Uganda-Kenya border and it’s the oldest and largest solitary, volcanic mountain in East Africa. At 4,000km² Mt. Elgon has the largest volcanic base in the world. Its vast form, 80km in diameter, rises more than 3,000m above the surrounding plains. The mountain’s cool heights offer respite from the hot plains below, with the higher altitudes providing a refuge for flora and fauna.
Mount Elgon National Park is home to over 300 species of birds, including the endangered Lammergeyer. The higher slopes are protected by national parks in Uganda and Kenya, creating an extensive trans-boundary conservation area which has been declared a UNESCO Man & Biosphere Reserve.
A climb on Mt. Elgon’s deserted moorlands unveils a magnificent and uncluttered wilderness without the summit-oriented approach common to many mountains: Mt. Elgon is not the final ascent to the 4321m Wagagai Peak, but the descent into the vast 40km² caldera.
This extinct volcano is one of Uganda’s oldest physical features, first erupting around 24 million years ago.
Mt Elgon was once Africa’s highest mountain, far exceeding Kilimanjaro’s current 5,895m. Millennia of erosion have reduced its height to 4,321m, relegating it to the 4th highest peak in East Africa and 8th on the continent.
Mt Elgon is home to two tribes, the Bagisu and the Sabiny, with the marginalized Ndorobos forced to dwell deep within the forest of Benet.
The Bagisu, also known as the BaMasaba, consider Mount Elgon to be the embodiment of their founding father Masaba and refer to the mountain by this name.

Day 1 Transfer From Kampala to Mount Elgon
Travel Time from Kampala to Mbale or Sipi Falls is 4 to 5 hours’ drive

Drive from Kampala to Mount Elgon National Park with your driver to Eastern Uganda on the Ugandan and Kenyan border. The Mountain covers the biggest surface areas of all the extinct volcanoes in the whole world. Expect to see magnificent waterfalls, like wanale and sipi falls, caves, cliffs and gorges.
Have a stopover in Mbale for lunch and as you go check in you will take a walk around Sipi falls, return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 2 Kapkwai Trail
Accommodation: Budget: Sipi River Lodge, Midrange: Rafiki Lodge and Sipi Falls Rest Camp, Luxury: Mbale Resort
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
You will wake up early in the morning for breakfast then head out of the lodge for a forest walk. Visit Kapkwai at the exploration centre, you may go through the Mountain Bamboo trail which is 7 km long, take a loop through, visit the gorge and while at the edge we shall come across the gentle river. After your forest trail return back for dinner and overnight at the lodge.
Day 3 Sasa Trail
Accommodation: Budget: Sipi River Lodge, Midrange: Rafiki Lodge and Sipi Falls Rest Camp, Luxury: Mbale Resort
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
After breakfast, proceed for a full day hiking through the Sasa trail, you will come across the moorland blended with scenic landscapes above the scenic green below. While here we shall have packed lunch and later return to the lodge for dinner and overnight at the lodge.
Day 4 Nature Walk & Return Trip to Kampala
Travel Time from Mbale to Kampala is 4 to 5 hours’ drive
Meal Plan: Breakfast & Lunch
Have your early morning breakfast after which you will head out for a brief forest walk. Later drive back to Kampala and we shall make a stopover

General Tips on your safaris:
- A porter can be hired in case you want to be carried for trekking, bags. For the trekking porter or helper, a fee of US$ 15 is charged
- Abseiling can be added as an optional activity which involves climbing down the steep slopes of sipi falls with firm equipment fastened to your harness
- Coffee tours may also be added onto your experience
