Hike the Rwenzori Mountains (Mountains of the Moon) to the snow peaks throughout the year. Blended with a wild life and glaciers that flow downstream the foot hills
Day 1 Pickup with a Transfer to Kasese with a Stopover in Fort portal
Travel time from Kampala to Kasese town is 6 hours 45 minutes’ drive
Travel time to Base Camp is 30 minutes’ drive for about 12 km
Accommodation: Margherita Hotel or Trekkers Hostel

After breakfast at your accommodation you will be picked up by our driver guide from your Hotel/Residence in Entebbe/Kampala with a transfer to Kasese town in Western Uganda. You will make a stopover for lunch in Fort portal and later drive to Kasese checking at the hostel for dinner and overnight at Base camp in Kyanjuki
Fort portal gives you a scenic view of the Rwenzori mountain ranges.
Day 2 Start your Hike at Base Camp to Sine Hut
Hike starts at 1450 m ascending to 2,596 m for a distance of 9.5 km
It takes 5 to 6 hours
Accommodation: Sine Hut

Margherita Peak – 8-day trek begins at the base camp. You shall either be briefed in the night or early morning by the park warden then trekking commences. With a steady walk and a steep climb for the last kilometer. Start at Trekkers at 1,450 meters and sleep at Sine Hut at 2,596 meters.
Along the trail we shall find a number of flora and fauna such giant ferns, tall trees in the Afro Monatane zone, Lichens tree species and moss, flowers and bamboo thickets as you hike to sine. You will also come across a number of primates like chimps and monkeys as well as a number of bird species.
Day 3 Hike from Sine Hut to Mutinda Camp
Start at 2,596 m to 3,688 m
Accommodation: Mutinda Camp

After breakfast trekking from sine hut at 2,596 meters start trekking at 8.30 am and you soon enter the Bamboo- Zone with a steep climb with many high steps. In the wet season the bamboo area is muddy and slippery making the hike slow however the atmosphere and the forest is beautiful as you climb 551 metres altitude and a distance of 1.8km to Kalalama Camp at 3,147 meters which is in the Heather-Rapanea Zone where you can take a rest and a quick cup of tea or coffee before heading on to Mutinda Camp at 3,688 meters. Along the trail you will witness several streams and waterfalls covered with moss.
Day 4 Mutinda Camp to Bugata Camp
Start at 3,688 m to 4,062 m for a distance of 4.9 km
Accommodation: Bugata Camp

With a distance of 8.5 km starting at 3,688 meters climbing to 4,062 meters Alpine Zone. The trail here is boggy particularly in the wet season but with a little skill you can step from tussock to tussock to make it easier. We cross the Mutinda valley through the tussock grass and everlasting flowers interspersed with many Giant Lobelias before we climb a steep section up to the Namusangi Valley (3,840 meters), which ends abruptly with sheer waterfalls and fantastic views of Mutinda Peaks. Bugata Camp has good facilities, solar lights, good toilets and bathrooms where the guides may prepare some warm water in a basin for you to wash.
Day 5 Bugata camp to Butawu Camp
Start at 4,062 m to 3,974 m for a distance 6.2 km
Accommodation: Butawu Camp

With a distance of 6.2km starting at 4,062 meters to 3,974 meters at Butawu commence trekking at 8:00 am to climb up Bamwanjara Pass ridge, the trail climbs steadily with several long flat bogs. The area is covered by everlasting flowers and Giant groundsel with the bogs being mainly tussock grass and Giant lobelia. The climb gives you a good view of the glacial lakes far down in the valley. Butawu Camp (3,974m) is set on a ridge high above Butawu River which flows down from Scott Elliott Pass through Kitandara Lakes and has fantastic views of the snowcapped Mt Baker.
Day 6 Butawu to Margherita Camp
Start at 3,974m to 4,485 m for a distance of 4.2 km
Accommodation: Margherita Camp

With a distance of 4.2 km starting at 3,974 meters climbing to 4,485 meters Walk on the ridge before crossing several wet areas and small rivers coming from Mt Baker to join Butawu River. The walk up Scott Elliott Pass as you climb up over the rocks and up to Margherita Camp (4,485) meters which is below Elena Hut at 4,550 meters and is sheltered with a ring of high rocks. Margherita camp was named after the Queen known as Margherita. As you hike up have great views of Mt Baker, Scott Elliot Pass and some of the high glaciers on Mt Stanley.
Day 7 Climbing Margherita and Back to Butawu Camp
Start at 4,485 m to 5,109 m for a distance of 3.5 km
Accommodation: Butawu Camp
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
With a distance of 3.5km Starting at 4,485 meters and climbing to Margherita Peak at 5,109 meters then descend to Butawu Camp at 3,974 meters. Wake up at 4am have a quick snack and start climbing the Stanley Glacier before sunrise. The climb up from Elena can be difficult if covered in snow and ice but Once on the Stanley glacier the going is easy however the climb down to Margherita glacier can be challenging and slippery in bad weather. On getting near to the top of the glacier you then need to climb around an exposed section, which is also bolted and roped, to get on the ridge running up to the top of Margherita Peak. On a clear day the views from Margherita Peak are magnificent. After summiting you then descend back to Butawu Camp. After this you shall descend back to Butawu.
Day 8 Butawu to Bugata Camp
Accommodation: Bugata Camp
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Descend from 3,974 m to 4,062 m
Have breakfast at 8.30am and start trekking by 9:00 am. The climb up Bamwanjara Pass is step and in wet weather can be rather slippery making our move slow. Sleep at Bugata Camp at 4,062 meters and descend direct to base Camp in one day. OR you can get an early start, take lunch at Bugata Camp or you may descend to Mutinda Camp and overnight. Then the following day descend to Base Camp but generally it is better to sleep at Bugata and descend down the following day.
Day 9 Descend to Base Camp
Travel time from Base Camp to Kasese Town is 30 minutes’ drive
Accommodation: Budget: Sandton Hotel or Trekkers Hostel, Midrange: Mountains of the Moon Hotel, Luxury: Mountain of Moon Hotel
Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Descend from Bugata at 4,062 m to Base Camp at 1,460 m
Descend to Base Camp after your early morning breakfast, when you return back you shall have late lunch at base camp and head to the hotel, relax and refreshen in the afternoon. You will have dinner at the lodge and overnight.
Day 10: Transfer Kasese to Kampala or the Airport
Travel time from Kasese to Kampala to Kampala town is 7 hours drive
Meal Plan: Breakfast & Lunch
After our Rwenzori hiking expedition, you will have breakfast early and then embark on your journey back to Kampala or Entebbe with a drop off at your residence or the Airport.

General Tips on your safaris:
- Health is key all trekkers. Fitness is the greatest necessity for all treks in the Rwenzori’s
- Please don’t forget to carry your medicine in case of some illness
- Booking of your gorilla and chimpanzee permits is done in advance in order for you not to miss out on the experience when permits are fully booked.
- A porter can be hired in case you want to be carried for trekking, bags. For the trekking porter or helper, a fee of US$ 15 is charged
- Follow your guide while on this hike
- Optional visit to Bigodi wetlands for a walk is recommended depending on your arrival in kibale
- Crater lakes visit and Amabere cultural experience can also be explored with an extra day.
- Clients should tip according to their satisfaction.
- Please let us know if there are specific desires that you may require.
- Rain gear are also ideal and heavy jackets when it gets chilly
- The package does not also include personal expenses outside the package arrangement

What to bring on your safari:
- Rubber Boots/ Hiking shoes, trousers and rain gears or rain coats and cloth gloves
- Comfortable rubber boots for the Mountain Trek and also for the hike at the caves and crater lakes in fort portal
- We also advise that you have backpack covers in case of any rains
- Mosquito repellent
- Sun screen is recommended
- Drinking during the trekking experience
- Camera, extra batteries plus a water proof bag
- Carry warm sleeping bags, head gears and hand gloves for cold weather conditions
Important Information on your Mountain Climbing Safari
- Accommodation is a blend mixed with of both huts and permanent tents on the trail. The huts have bunk beds with mattresses, tents have mattresses and a warm sleeping bag is recommended.
- Equipment: Harnesses, crampons, caribinas, ice axes, helmets, rubber boots are a must have and ropes are all provided free of charge.
- Temperature can go as low as -2 degrees above 4000 meters and 5 degrees below 4000 meters and highest of 15 degrees which mainly around 2900 and 3500 during day.
- Drinking water can be boiled up the mountain or use of water purifiers
- Porters will be carrying your luggage maximum weight 15kg each, we advise that you carry a big backpack which the porters will be carry and a day pack for your personal staff and 2 porters are provided per client
- Extra porters can be organised at an extra fee of $15 per day.
- Guides / Rangers will always be provided that is 2 or more. The guides are all well trained, with first aid skills, guiding skills, evacuation skills, flora and fauna, abseiling, cooking, safety & security and customer care.
- Insurance is mandatory for all treks and all clients should buy their insurance before arrival covering Medivac and evacuation at an altitude of 4000 metres and above. It’s not included in the Package
- Equipped with stretchers and a first aid box and always have a satellite phone on all treks.
- First aid is provided to avoid severe illness or sickness.
- In case of an emergency porters will help you down the mountains. If it requires being transfered to the airport or hospital
